Study on the Growth and Bulb Formation of Garlic Plants (Allium Sativum L.)

Abstract
To investigate the effect of night interruption on the growth and bulbing of garlic plants, night interruption of 5 to 180 min. with incandescent, red and far-red light was treated at mid-night. Short day of 8 to 10hrs prolonged the vegetative growth and suppressed bulb formation until the time when plants under natural conditions finished the bulbing. Night interruption was most effective in the middle of dark period, and only that of 60 min. or longer duration treatment showed recognizable interruption effect. Bulb formation and ripening were hastened and secondary growth was suppressed with an increasment of supplemental lightening from 60 to 180 min. Red or far-red light interruption of 30 min. had little or no influence on the growth and bulbing. In conclusion, longday conditions for growth and bulbing of garlic were possibly substituted by night interruption, and it was most effective when treated at the middle of dark period for 60 min. or longer time.
